FAREWELL

I've done this stint for almost half a year, out of passionate concern, compassion, and sincere sense of duty towards my fellow Filipinos who are either unknowing victims of local TV shows due to desperate poverty, or maybe just plain greed.

As you would read in the past postings below, more were agitated, closed-mindedly critical, almost with a suffocating zealotry over some kitsch TV show.

Pointless.

For me, this is not a waste of time. It is an expression of freedom, an outvoicing of compassion (korni pero tamaan na ng kidlat, naaawa talaga ako sa mga nakita ko sa TV) and an attempt to provide a voice for a cause.

This cause is a misunderstood one. But it is never dead.

It's time we moved on, didn't we? Kung walang paki ang iba diyan, they can rot in their nihilistic, pointless lives. Basta hindi ko kayang maging manhid.

This is the last post here. Ipagpatuloy mo, kung may puso ka.

And atention is what we need if we are to promote this cause.
Let us not direct our anger at the show's people. Let us write petition letters,make stickers, build websites,and send email,all for promoting respect for human dignity and respect.

ANIMAL ABUSE ON "MORNING GIRLS"

To Whom It May Concern:

This is in regards to the disturbing content of the ABS-CBN program,
Morning Girls (airs 10:30 – 11:30AM on weekdays), as well as the
irresponsible, dangerous behavior and comments of one of its co-hosts, Korina
Sanchez.

This complaint refers to two episodes in particular – one that was
aired on the 13th of June 2003 and another which was broadcast June 25,
2003. The former featured various celebrity “pet owners” ranging from
Sharmaine Arnaiz to Chavit Singson. At a certain point in the program,
Sanchez related how a stray cat had managed to enter her residence and
killed the African Lovebirds that she kept in a cage. She then informed
the on-air audience that she intended to buy a pellet gun and would not
hesitate to use it on any cat that she saw. When her co-host, Kris
Aquino, expressed alarm at Sanchez’s statement, the latter emphatically
replied: “Babarilin ko talaga sila!”

The topic of the June 25 episode, on the other hand, was gambling.
Despite Sanchez’s incredulous disclaimer that Morning Girls was not
endorsing said activity, this didn’t stop the producers from featuring guests
who gave tips on, among others, cockfights and spiderfights. The show
even featured live animals (a pair of spiders and at least one pair of
roosters) that were made to fight right there in the studio.

These are but two episodes among several that have offended viewers of
Morning Girls for the cruelty to animals that they seemingly promote
and encourage. As this is a program targeted toward homemakers, many
impressionable children get to view it alongside their mothers, yayas,
etc. Although naturally fond of animals, these young viewers get the
mistaken impression that it is acceptable to treat animals with cruelty and
disrespect.

Morning Girls is just one among many manifestations of the cutthroat TV
network war that finds far too many unthinking executives, producers,
writers and hosts scraping the bottom of the barrel in the ruthless
search for increased ratings. Children and animals – among others who
cannot defend themselves – are oftentimes the immediate victims of this
war. Ultimately, however, with the unchecked rapid proliferation of such
programs on local TV, the entire nation suffers.

Reality TV gets real ugly
Fat, ugly and gay translates to star fodder on Manila's midday television shows. Forget marginalization — there are cash prizes of up to $38,617 and showbiz fame up for grabs.

Just ask the participants of popular noon show Magandang Tanghali Bayan (MTB), which hosts "Queen Size of the World," a pageant for obese gays. Controversial? Hardly — it replaced the "Is That My Boy?" contest for homosexuals aged 7-10 which "just didn't work," says an MTB executive. The show also recently ran the "Ador-able" non-beauty contest named after Angelo "Ador" Mawanay, a "googly-eyed" informant in the Senator Panfilo Lacson corruption case.

"MTB reflects what's currently going on in Filipino society," says Lawrence Tan spokesman for the show's channel, ABS-CBN. "And Filipinos have always loved pageants."

As for poking fun at homosexuality, Tan says it's now an acceptable part of society. Maybe so, but channel IBC 13 is rethinking its decision to sell air time to its Lunch Break show. Executives admit a youth gay cheerleading segment, "Charing Squad" ("charing" means joking) needs "improvement" .

The shock-contest trend was set by channel GMA 7's variety show Eat Bulaga, home to "Feeling Sexy," a contest for fat women, and "Feeling Pogi" (for ugly men) since late 2000. "People don't want to see hardship and pain on TV," says show writer Jen Ferre. "They want to be entertained and laugh." That's laugh with the contestants, of course, not at them.

Tiniyak ni Movie Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) chair Maria Consoliza Laguardia kay Bulacan Rep. Willie Villarama na isang “drastikong” aksiyon ang gagawin ng kanyang tanggapan ngayong lingggo laban sa umano’y tatlong bastos na male host ng Masayang Tanghali Bayan (MTB).

Sa panayam, sinabi ni Villarama na mismong si Laguardia ang nagsabi sa kanya na kakastiguhin ngayong linggo ang tatlo kung patuloy pa ring magpapakita ng sinasabing kalaswaan sa pananalita sa kabila ng reklamo.

Sinabi ni Villarama na bago pa man sila nagkita ni Laguardia sa tanggapan nito noong nakaraang Lunes, dalawang beses nang pinagsabihan ng MTRCB chairperson ang MTB kaugnay sa hindi tamang inaasal nina Willy Revillame, John Estrada at Randy Santiago.

“I (Lagurdia) just want to inform you (Villarama) that even before you came to my office, I have previously warned MTB strongly, two times,” ani Laguardia kay Villarama.

Bukod dito, sinabi ni Villarama na pinagsabihan rin ni Laguardia ang mismong pamunuan ng ABS-CBN na pagsabihan ang tatlong host kaugnay sa umaabuso at hindi tamang pagho-host.

“In fact, secondly, when the ABS-CBN management came to my office last Tuesday, I advised them to talk to the three television hosts. I will have my next move dopne within (this week),” pagtatapos ni Laguardia kay Villarama.

Magugunitang nagtungo sa MTRCB si ABS-CBN vice president for government and media relations Maloli Manalastas noong nakaraang Martes upang makipag-usap sa reklamo hinggil sa kontrobersiyal na Taiwanese soap opera na Meteor Garden.

Tinawagan ni Villarama, kongresistang pumalag sa Meteor Garden, ang pansin ni Laguardia matapos isumite ni Bacolod City Rep. Monico Puentevella ang House Resolution (HR) No. 1194.

Layunin ng resolusyon na imbestigahan ang MTB na nag-ugat sa isang letter to the editor ni Boy Blue P. Filomeno, spokesperson ng Philippine Alliance Against Pornography, sa isang diyaryo hinggil sa umano’y kabastusan nina Revillame, Estrada at Santiago.

Maging si Majority leader at Mandaluyong City Rep. Neptali Gonzales II ay nagsabing “poor taste” talaga ang MTB dahil sa sinasabing kabastusan na makikita sa noontime television show.

Inihayag na rin ni Puentevella na isasama sa imbestigasyon maging ang iba pan male-host na gumagamit ng bulgar na salita katulad nina comedian-host Vic Sotto at Joey de Leon ng Eat Bulaga sa Channel 7.

Tinukoy ni Filomeno sa reklamo ang episode ng MTB noong Mayo 17, 2003 kung saan konektado ang bulgar na pagsasalita nina Revillame, Estrada at Santiago sa “sex.”

Kabilang dito ang pagsigaw ni Revillame ng salitang “Jack” kung saan sumasagot sa pormang chorus ang tinatanong na audience ng “En Poy”.

Ngunit, sinabi ni Filomeno na hindi maganda nang uling banggitin ni Revillame ang “Jack” at sumagot ng malakas si Estrada ng “Kol” na malinaw na tagalog slang ng “masturbation.”

INHUMANE ACTS OF MEDIA
Media plays a big role in the lives of people that is why it greatly influences the dictate of society. It easily affects how we behave and think but most especially how kids do. Given a huge responsibility, the media should be very careful with whatever information or kind of entertainment they serve to the people.

Everything is so advanced in the ‘world’ today, from the gadgets to the clothes up to the mindset of the people. Advanced in the sense that people are more liberated with the way they approach matters. Here in the Philippines, we usually adapt the fad in the States, that whatever is ‘uso’ there it becomes ‘uso’ here. We base the things that we consider ‘modern’ here, from whatever new things (mostly clothes and the way of entertainment) they come up with in the States. We embrace almost everything that they do as our own even if our culture is far more different than the foreign culture.

I was watching the noon time shows EAT BULAGA and MTB last week, I couldn’t help but to notice their segments ‘o ano,kakasa ka ba?’ and ‘most wanted’ that are very similar to foreign shows such as ‘Fear Factor’ and ‘Who Dares, Wins’. at first i was amazed with such ideas that tv shows come up with just to entice people to watch them. later on, as i got to watch a couple episode of these segments i realized that there was more to it than just entertaining the viewers, it was an embodiment of exploitation, and dehumanizing acts dressed up in something that could help people earn easy cash. a specific episode that called my attention in mtb was when the most wanted was the one with the most number of body piercings. the cash prize was p50,000. most of the contestants just had their piercings if not the day before, the morning before the show just to get easy cash. it makes me wonder how much they went out of their way just to have had those piercings done when it’s so much of a hassle and expensive to go to shops. Meanwhile, the episodes in EAT BULAGA were the ones wherein they made the contestants eat coffee and the other challenge was to endure lying in a huge container and rats were put there. By the looks of it, it seems very unhealthy. Coffee contains caffeine, too much of it could cause you to palpitate and keep you up. Rats are known to be dirty creatures because they are disease carriers, once they bite, you could have rabies. What does the DOH have to say to this?

This is not a matter that we could be nonchalant about. We could not sit back, get grossed out or pity them and think that those segments will soon end to give way to other ‘brilliant’ segments. These are very inhumane acts that should end now. Yeah it may help people get hold of easy money especially now that it’s very difficult to earn a living but do we ever think that it also encourages people to be lazy? it gives us the idea that we can just vandalize our bodies or exploit ourselves just to earn a couple of bucks. it makes us seem desperate. also we tend to forget that our body is the temple of god, it is not ours and the least we could do is respect it and maintain the sanctity of it. i’d sound like a hypocrite if I said that I do that all the time, my point is that we should observe moderation; we should know our limitation. No one is perfect, we are only humans but that precisely is the point why we should try to surpass our weaknesses and become better for the Lord.

These acts also show what kind of society we live in today. People are so liberated that values are somewhat under rated, almost forgotten. We should always keep in mind that values are IMPORTANT no matter what era we are in. It also describes the irresponsibility of the media but I hope this could be a calling to them to try to be more responsible and to be extra cautious with what they serve to the audience. To us Filipinos, we should embrace our own culture and be proud of it. We could do so much as long as we believe in what we can do. MABUHAY ANG MGA PINOY!

MADADAWIT umano maging sina comedian-host Vic Sotto at Joey de Leon ng Eat Bulaga sa imbestigasyon ng House committee on public information kaugnay sa kabastusan umano ni Masayang Tanghali Bayan (MTB) host Willie Revillame matapos igiit ng mga kongresista na isama sa pagsisiyasat ang lahat ng television-host na gumagamit ng sinasabing bulgar at bastos na mga salita.

Sa panayam, sinabi ni Bacolod City Rep. Monico Puentevella na hindi dapat sumikat ang male-host na gumagamit ng kabastusan para maging kuwela at patok ang kanilang programa.

Sinabi ni Puentevella na palalawakin nila ang pagsisiyasat upang matiyak na makukuha ng komite ang nararapat na resulta na nag-ugat sa sobra umanong kabastusan ni Revillame sa MTB ng ABS-CBN Channel 2.

"We will expand our investigation to all television hosts who are using vulgar words in their shows. We are going to hold them accountable to all their doings," ani Puentevella.

Magugunitang sinita na rin noon ng mga kongresista ang sinasabing mga salita nina Vic at Joey sa kanilang noontime show sa GMA Channel 7 na mayroon umanong "double meaning."

Kamakalawa, pormal na isinumite ni Puentevella ang House Resolution (HR) No. 1194 upang bigyang-daan ang imbestigasyon na nag-ugat sa isang letter to the editor ni Boy Blue P. Filomeno, spokes-person ng Philippine Alliance Against Pornography, sa isang daily hinggil sa umano'y kabastusan nina Revillame, John Estrada at Randy Santiago.

Sinuportahan naman ni Majority Leader at Mandaluyong City Rep. Neptali Gonzales II ang panukalang palawakin ang imbestigasyon upang matutukan rin ang iba pang television hosts na gumagamit ng masasamang salita para makapagpatawa.

"That's better, we should not single out MTB. We need to include all abusive male hosts who are using bad words, I reiterate my position that MTB is in poor taste," ani Gonzales.

Matatandaang kinalampag na nina Puentevella at Gonzales ang atensiyon ni Movie Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) Chairperson Maria Consoliza Laguardia upang supilin ang nagha-haring kabastusan ni Revillame na minsang sinibak sa nabuwag na Magandang Tanghali Bayan.

Tinukoy ni Filomeno sa reklamo ang episode ng MTB noong Mayo 17, 2003 kung saan konektado ang bulgar na pagsasalita nina Revillame, Estrada at Santiago sa "Sex."

Kabilang dito ang pagsigaw ni Revillame ng salitang "Jack" kung saan sumasagot sa pormang chorus ang tinatanong na audience ng "En Poy."

Ngunit, sinabi ni Filomeno na hindi maganda nang muling banggitin ni Revillame ang "Jack" at sumagot ng malakas si Estrada ng "Kol" na malinaw na Tagalog slang ng "masturbation."

Kinuwestiyon rin ni Filomeno ang paulit-ulit na pagtatanong ni Revillame sa nakaraang episode ng MTB kung saan sinasabi nito sa isang lady dancer na nagdiriwang ng kanyang kaarawan na "Do you know how to blow?" habang hawak ng host-comedian ang isang cake na malinaw na ipinalilitaw umano ang "oral sex."

Hindi rin nagustuhan ni Filomeno ang sinabi ni Revillame na "Mambabastos na naman ako dahil wala naman akong natatanggap na sulat galing sa MTRCB."

Nakapaloob pa sa reklamo ang pahayag ni Revillame sa isang lady dancer na "Ikaw bay ay na World War I na? Ang World War 1 ang pinakamasakit because it is the first time na nagkaroon ng giyera. Dahil papasukin ng mga kalaban ang inyong tinataguang kuta."

'EAT BULAGA' EXECS FACE COPYRIGHT VIOLATION RAPS

The Office of the City Prosecutor of Quezon City has filed criminal charges against the Television and Production Exponents Inc. (TAPE), producer of the long-running GMA-7 noontime show 'Eat Bulaga', for violation of the Intellectual Code of the Philippines.

Named as defendants were TAPE board directors Antonio P. Tuviera, Romeo P. Jalosjos, Teodoro S. Toribio, Juanico B. Enrico and Cenon V. Lucas, along with 'Eat Bulaga' executive producer Malou Choa-Fagar and head writer Jennifer Ferre.

Tuviera, Choa-Fagar and Ferre are out on bail, while the rest (with the exception of Jalosjos, who is serving time at the National Penitentiary) are still the subjects of an arrest warrant issued by Branch 90 presiding judge Reynaldo Daway of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court.

Their arraignment has been scheduled for December 7.

The charges stemmed from a complaint filed by Inquirer trivia-quiz columnist and TV producer-writer Bong Barrameda against the accused for their "extensive unauthorized use" of his copyrighted works as daily material in the "Meron O Wala" quiz segment of 'Eat Bulaga' from June 1999 until it was renamed 'Laban O Bawi' in October 2000.

In her resolution, investigating prosecutor Rosanna Fe Romer-Maglaya wrote: "This office finds probable cause to indict the respondents for violation of Republic Act 8293, otherwise known as the Intellectual Property Code…

Records show, and as admitted, complainant is the author and exclusive copyright owner of the 'Pinoy Trivia' book series (Volumes 1-4), 'Thinkathon Pocket Quiz Game' (Editions 1-4), and the trivia and Thinkathon columns in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Being the copyright owner of the aforesaid works, complainant has the exclusive right to carry out, authorize or prevent, among others, the public performance or other communication to the public of the works.

"However, on several occasions starting June 1999, the evidence shows that 'Eat Bulaga', a noontime variety show produced and headed by respondents, featured a quiz segment (titled) 'Meron O Wala,' which publicly used, recited and communicated the articles, questions, and answers and other data contained in the aforementioned copy-righted works, either lifted verbatim there from or translated literally into tagalog, but without the permission and authority of the copyright owner. Said unauthorized use and public transmission of the works are proved by the transcripts of the video-tapes of the particular episodes of the said noontime show."

Barrameda, a one-time TV quiz champion who is currently program consultant of the award-winning TV programs 'Digital LG Quiz' and 'Knowledge Power', said he had to file the complaint to protect his works and name.
